6% ABV, 23 IBU

Tasting notes: balanced noble hops, sweet pilsner malt, golden

Ah, Fall time is upon us once again. That means Oktober Fest beers are on full display here in Columbus, Ohio (and everywhere else too).

I tasted the Skol Crusher Dortmunder by Gemüt Biergarten and in a moment I’ll reveal the verdict on whether it is a top Oktoberfest contender, or a, well, not so top contender.

But first, a little background on the establishment where you can find the golden beverage.

Gemüt Biergarten is located in Olde Towne East, in the heart of Downtown Columbus. Owners Chelsea Rennie, Kyle Hofmeister, Rob Camstra and Nick Guyton opened the doors to Gemüt in 2019.

It is a German beer hall for the new age. Inside, you’ll feel the warm embrace of tradition. Although upon reflection, perhaps the warm embrace I felt was from the stein of beer I had consumed. Regardless, it is a very cozy and welcoming atmosphere.

Inside, you have tables set in a communal style, you can fit all of your friends at a long table, or find yourself in company with new friends. After all, beer and good food brings people together.

Outside, you have a small patio out front and a much larger patio, Biergarten area in the back.

The Beer

The Skol Crusher Dortmunder is definitely a commendable representation of the Dortmunder lager style, blending the crispness of a Pilsner with the robustness of an Oktoberfest.

Its golden hue gives way to a pleasant malt-forward aroma, punctuated by subtle hints of honey and earthy hops. Or at least that’s what this common guy tasted. It may have been the atmosphere that is having my wax poetic on this review.

Onward.

On the palate, it presents a harmonious interplay between sweet maltiness and mild bitterness, culminating in a clean and refreshingly dry finish. This brew pays a fitting homage to the industrial heritage of Dortmund (there’s a fun fact for your friends), offering both depth and drinkability in every sip.

Verdict: 5/5

This is a fantastic beverage for the fall months of September, October and November. Heck, it’s a beer that you can drink year round.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Skol Crusher Dortmunder and I think you will too.
